Friday Night Lights

🏈 LOGAN - Logan left little doubt Friday night, jumping all over Ben Lomond early and cruising to a 49-0 shutout to improve to 6-2 on the season. Easton Favero was responsible for five touchdowns, scoring on a 3-yard run and throwing four touchdown passes, including two to Trey Covington from 20 and 11 yards. The Grizzlies exploded to a 43-0 halftime lead, putting the mercy rule into effect and allowing Logan to get some different faces on the field after the break. Noah Dawson connected with Covington for another 11-yard touchdown in the fourth, giving Covington three receiving touchdowns on the night. Maybe the biggest takeaway continues to be how dangerous Logan has looked over the last month: the Grizzlies have now won four straight, scoring 192 points during that stretch, and have gone from 2-2 to 6-2 heading into a much tougher road test at Grantsville (5-3) next week.

🏈 GREEN CANYON - Green Canyon put together its best offensive night of the season Friday, rolling past Tooele 44-19 and snapping a two-game skid. The Wolves led 23-6 at halftime before putting up another 21 points in the third quarter to break things open. Ethan Munk led the charge with two rushing touchdowns and a 46-yard touchdown pass to Huston Paremski, while Samuel Selman opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run. Kicker Boston Daines drilled field goals from 40, 23 and 34 yards and going 5-for-5 on extra points. Green Canyon also made plays defensively, with Leland Palmer returning a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown, while Sawyer Stewart and Chris Lowe each came away with an interception. The Wolves finished with 380 yards of offense — 215 through the air and 165 on the ground — and the 44 points were a season high. Green Canyon improves to 3-5 and now gets a massive Cache Valley test Wednesday night when undefeated Ridgeline comes to North Logan.

🏈 RIDGELINE - The Riverhawks took on Stansbury, grinding out their toughest win in awhile. Hudson Parry had a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown. In the second quarter, Ridgline had a good stop in the red zone and were up 28-21 at halftime. But the Stallions didn’t go away and put up 10 points and took the lead 31-28, mainly behind their QB Brighton Reutzel. However, Riley Fairbanks took the momentum back with a key interception in the 3rd. With 10 minutes left, Crew Cox had a clutch touchdown pass to Owen Leishman for 26 yards to take the lead back. And when it mattered most, Ridgeline turned to Noah Fiefia to close it out. After three straight first touchdowns, Ridgeline ran out the clock to win. Fiefia finished with 252 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns.

🏈 MOUNTAIN CREST - Mountain Crest’s offense came alive in a big way Friday night, as the Mustangs knocked off Bear River 49-35 in a region battle. Brady Muir accounted for four touchdowns to lead the Mountain Crest attack, while Tanner Harris hauled in two first-half touchdown catches. The Mustangs grabbed the lead early and never gave it back, eventually getting a 14-yard touchdown connection from Muir to Kolden Kennington with 4 minutes remaining to close it out. Bear River didn’t go quietly. Bennett Allen scored twice in the second quarter, while QB Preston Wilkinson connected with Glaiden Behrens for a 71-yard touchdown in the fourth that kept the Bears within striking distance. Mountain Crest answered and finished off the 49-35 win, moving the Mustangs to 5-3 on the season. Mountain Crest has now won back-to-back games and five of its last six at home.

🏈 SKY VIEW - Talk about a response. One week after a tough 41-3 loss to Ridgeline, Sky View came back home and completely took care of business in a 51-0 win over Deseret Peak. Tucker Stokes got things started with an 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and later connected with Drake Bohm for a 41-yard touchdown as the Bobcats quickly took control. Maybe the bigger story, though, was the defense. Sky View pitched its first shutout of the season and never gave Deseret Peak a chance to make this one interesting. The win gets the Bobcats back to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in region play. Sky View now heads to Stansbury on Wednesday before finishing the regular season at home against Tooele. The Bobcats have already shown they can beat Mountain Crest and Green Canyon, and now they get a chance to build some real momentum heading toward the postseason.

🏈 BEAR RIVER - Bear River couldn’t quite finish the comeback Friday night. Every time it looked like the Mustangs might put this one away, Bear River found a way to make things interesting again. Bennett Allen scored twice in the second quarter, helping the Bears stay within striking distance, and then came the play that gave Bear River some real life late: Preston Wilkinson found Glaiden Behrens for a 71-yard touchdown with 7:53 remaining to cut into the Mountain Crest lead. The Mustangs eventually answered with a touchdown of their own to put it away, but Bear River once again showed how dangerous this offense can be when it gets going. The Bears came into the matchup averaging more than 300 passing yards and 420 total yards per game, with Wilkinson among the state’s more productive quarterbacks. The loss drops Bear River to 5-3 and snaps a three-game road winning streak, but there’s still plenty to play for. Next up is a Deseret Peak team that is still searching for its first win — a good opportunity for the Bears.

VARSITY CLUB 🏅

LOGAN

🏐 Girls Volleyball - Logan got the W against Ben Lomond on Tuesday, winning 3-0. On Thursday, the Grizzlies fell to Morgan in straight sets, 25-15, 25-16 and 25-13, dropping them to 4-18 overall and 1-5 in region play. Senior Nora Wiberg has been Logan's leading attacker, while setter Cadence Boyer has recorded the most assists and aces. Brooke Bergsjo has been one of the team's top defenders and Eva Light leads Logan at the net in blocks. The Grizzlies have dropped nine straight but will look to turn things around Tuesday when they travel to Grantsville.

⚽ Girls Soccer - It was a tough one for Logan girls soccer this week, as the Grizzlies fell 6-0 to Morgan for their third straight loss. There’s still an opportunity for the Grizzlies to finish the regular season on a good note. Logan sits at 4-9 overall and 2-5 in region play, with Schmidt leading the team in goals per game. Fuentes has also been one of Logan’s better creators, leading the team in assists per game. The good news? Logan closes with Ben Lomond on Tuesday, a team the Grizzlies already beat 6-0 earlier this season. One more chance to grab a region win and build a little momentum before the postseason begins.

🎾 Girls Tennis - Logan girls tennis headed south for the 3A State Tournament this week, and the Grizzlies gave us plenty to follow. Shreya Garg opened state with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles before falling to No. 6 seed Lynsey Hatch in the Round of 16, while Harper Lambert was nearly perfect in her opener at third singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 before her run also ended in the Round of 16. The biggest story, though, has been Logan’s doubles play. Sarah Wilden and Louisa Ricks rolled through Ogden 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16 and then knocked off the No. 4-seeded Grantsville duo 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. That sends Wilden and Ricks into Saturday’s state semifinals, where they’ll face the No. 1-seeded duo from Rowland Hall. Logan’s second doubles team of Harper Davidson and Raven Burnham also reached the quarterfinals after a 6-0, 6-3 Round of 16 win before falling to Morgan. So while most of Logan’s lineup has wrapped up its season, the Grizzlies still have a shot at bringing some hardware back to Cache Valley — Wilden and Ricks are among the final four doubles teams left standing in 3A.

GREEN CANYON

🏐 Girls Volleyball - Green Canyon continues to look like one of the teams to beat in 4A. The Wolves swept all four teams they played this week! They made a statement against Tooele on Tuesday, mainly behind Eliza Force’s 19 assists and 2 aces. Charly Monson also had a solid game with 7 aces and 3 digs. On Thursday, GC beat Ridgeline in straight sets. Audrey White had 13 kills, 7 digs, and 3 aces. Eliza Force with another massive game that included 37 assists and 5 kills. The Wolves also played two matches on Friday at the Best of the West Tournament, winning both against Davis and Box Elder.

⚽ Girls Soccer - Green Canyon continues to roll as the regular season winds down. The Wolves started the week by exploding for a 9-1 win over Sky View, scoring five times in the first half and four more in the second. Chloe Sadler led the way with 4 goals and 2 assists, helping Green Canyon finish with 9 goals and 7 assists as a team. The Wolves followed that up Thursday with a 2-0 road shutout over Stansbury, breaking a scoreless tie with two second-half goals. Sadler added another goal and assist, Autumn Howell scored the other goal, and Britt Maw helped Green Canyon preserve the shutout. The two wins move Green Canyon to 16-1 overall and 12-1 in region play. What’s crazy is the fact that this team has outscored opponents 102-7 this season!

🎾 Girls Tennis - Six straight for the Wolves. Green Canyon held off Ridgeline at this week's Region 11 Tournament to claim its sixth consecutive region championship. The Wolves entered the tournament after going a perfect 7-0 in region duals, and needed contributions throughout the lineup to stay in front of the Riverhawks in the team race. Carly Huish captured the region title at third singles, while Ruby Warner and Norah Washburn won the first doubles championship to lead Green Canyon. Sophie Anderson finished runner-up at first singles, Evelyn Wilkinson took second at second singles, and the second doubles team of Amelia Wilkinson and Ellie Jones also finished runner-up. That consistency across all five positions was enough for Green Canyon to hold off Ridgeline. Now it's on to state, where GC will send its entire varsity lineup to the 4A Statement Tournament, lead at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights.

RIDGELINE

🏐 Girls Volleyball - It was a busy week for Ridgeline volleyball. Ridgeline opened the week by making quick work of Stansbury in a 3-0 sweep, winning 25-14, 25-8 and 25-13 and holding the Stallions to just 35 total points. The competition picked up Thursday in a big Region 11 matchup against rival Green Canyon, where the Wolves handed Ridgeline a 3-0 loss, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-17. Ridgeline then turned around Friday for a matchup with Skyline at the Best of the West Tournament, but the Riverhawks were swept 3-0 to close out the week.

⚽ Girls Soccer - Ridgeline just keeps finding ways to win. The Riverhawks opened the week with a 2-1 overtime win at Mountain Crest, picking up another huge result in the region title race, before returning home Wednesday and beating Sky View 3-1. Ridgeline has now won 11 straight matches and sits at 13-3 overall and 12-1 region play. Sam Brown has been at the center of Ridgeline’s attack, while freshman Mya Vetica and senior Reagan Brown have been the assist leaders.

🎾 Girls Tennis - Ridgeline pushed the Wolves all the way to the finish before settling for second at the Region 11 Tournament. The Riverhawks will still send their entire lineup on to state. Brixen Henderson earned the No. 13 seed at first singles, while Taylor Southam earned the No. 2 seed at second singles after putting together one of the best seasons in 4A. Erica Wang is the No. 6 seed at third singles, and Ridgeline is especially dangerous in doubles with Silvie and Lindy Ellis earning the No. 3 seed at first doubles and Maylee Gines and Summer Spaulding taking the No. 6 seed at second doubles. First-round matches begin Thursday at Brighton High School.

MOUNTAIN CREST

🏐 Girls Volleyball - Mountain Crest began the week with a 3-1 loss at Sky View on Tuesday. Against Sky View, Finlee Greenhalgh and Kennedy Sautter led the Mustangs with 7 kills apiece, while Makell Crofts filled up the stat sheet with 26 assists, 8 digs, 5 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks. Whitney Madsen led the defense with 16 digs, Sophie Bishop added 5 aces and 7 digs, and Clara Mangum controlled the net with 4 blocks. On Friday, MC got the win against Manti 2-0, but lost to Pine View 2-0. More matches happening today!

⚽ Girls Soccer - MC split its two matches this week, but finished on a high note with one of its most complete performances of the season. The Mustangs battled Ridgeline all the way into overtime Monday before falling 2-1, then responded Wednesday by rolling past Deseret Peak 5-0 on the road. Madison Verhoef led the way with 2 goals, while Jaidyn Stewart, Summer Nielsen and Chloe Burton each found the back of the net to give Mountain Crest five different scoring contributions. Liv Jensen recorded the shutout in goal, while the Mustangs put the match away early by scoring four times in the first half. Mountain Crest is now 10-7 overall and 8-5 in region play, with 54 goals scored against 23 allowed this season, and the Mustangs will close out the regular season Monday at home against Sky View.

🎾 Girls Tennis - Mountain Crest wrapped up the with a fourth-place finish at the Region 11 Tournament this week and will send representatives from all five varsity positions into the 4A State Tournament. Lila Bingham will represent the Mustangs at first singles as the No. 17 seed, while Kaysley Oswald earned the No. 18 seed at second singles and Grace Hadfield picked up the No. 13 seed at third singles. Mountain Crest will also have both doubles teams at state, with Sydney Linschoten and Catie Bindrup earning the No. 20 seed at first doubles and Audrey Nielsen and Remy Stewart taking the No. 18 seed at second doubles.

SKY VIEW

🏐Girls Volleyball - Sky View put together a strong week on the volleyball court, picking up wins over Mountain Crest, Deseret Peak and Roy before falling to Provo on Friday. The Bobcats opened the week with a 3-1 win over Mountain Crest, finishing with 41 kills, 55 digs and 13 aces as a team. Jenna Hiatt led the attack with 11 kills, while Paige Allen added 4 kills and 3 blocks and Camry Parker was named Player of the Match. Sky View then pulled off a huge comeback Thursday against Deseret Peak, dropping the first two sets before storming back for a 3-2 win, 11-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-9. Hiatt was everywhere with 17 kills, 16 digs and 3 aces, while Parker anchored the back row with 29 digs and 3 aces. The Bobcats kept it rolling Friday with a 3-0 sweep of Roy, led by Paige Allen's 6 kills, Reese Seeley's 12 assists and Hiatt's 6 aces, before their three-match winning streak ended with a 3-0 loss to Provo later Friday.

⚽ Girls Soccer - It was a tough week for Sky View girls soccer. The Bobcats fell 9-1 at Green Canyon before battling Ridgeline in a 3-1 loss Wednesday. Sky View did find the back of the net in both matches, but Green Canyon scored five times in the first half Monday before adding four more after the break, while Ridgeline held off the Bobcats two nights later. Meah Marchant leads Sky View in goals this season, while Gracie Johnson has dished out the most assists and Sadie Spackman has been another key piece of the Bobcat attack. Sky View will have one more opportunity to finish the regular season on a high note when the Bobcats travel to Mountain Crest on Monday.

🎾 Girls Tennis - Sky View wrapped up the Region 11 portion of its season this week and will send a strong group into the 4A State Tournament, with the Bobcats qualifying an entry at all five varsity positions. Ashley Wallis earned the No. 12 seed at first singles and will open state against No. 21 Pearle Lindquist of Dixie, while Greta Lattin is the No. 11 seed at second singles and draws No. 22 Jacie Jennings of Dixie. Daivie Eldredge earned the No. 7 seed at third singles, giving Sky View its highest-seeded singles player and a first-round bye into the Round of 16. In doubles, Samantha Bender and Avaree Haramoto are seeded No. 16 at first doubles and will face Pine View's Hadley Hardman and Kaylee Koch, while Addelynn Morton and Avery Ashcroft earned the No. 14 seed at second doubles and draw Deseret Peak's Audrey Wardle and Lucy Dearden. With all five positions represented, Sky View will have plenty of chances to pick up points when the 4A State Tournament begins Thursday at Brighton High School.

BEAR RIVER

🏐 Girls Volleyball - Bear River put together another strong week on the volleyball court, going 3-1 with wins over Deseret Peak, Tooele and Cottonwood before a five-set battle with Weber ended the Bears’ three-match winning streak. Bear River opened the week Tuesday with a 3-0 sweep of Deseret Peak, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, behind a big night from Makell Garn, who finished with 9 kills, 10 digs and 3 aces, while Brynlee Garn added 18 assists, 12 digs and 2 blocks. The Bears followed it up Thursday with another 3-0 sweep over Tooele and carried that momentum into Friday’s Cache Challenge, sweeping Cottonwood 3-0 before falling to Weber 3-2 in a five-set battle. The loss to Weber snapped a three-match winning streak and moved Bear River to 14-4 overall, with the Bears continuing to put together one of the stronger seasons in Region 11.

⚽ Girls Soccer - Bear River girls soccer had a pair of close Region 11 matches this week but couldn’t quite turn either one into a win. The Bears opened the week Monday with a 3-0 loss to Stansbury before traveling to Tooele on Wednesday and coming up just short in a 2-1 loss. Bear River has had a difficult stretch after picking up back-to-back region wins earlier this season over Tooele and Deseret Peak, and the Bears now sit at 2-15 overall heading into their regular-season finale. Bear River will get one more shot to finish the year on a high note Monday when it hosts Deseret Peak, a team the Bears beat 5-1 in their first meeting.

🎾 Girls Tennis - Bear River finished 6th in the reigon tournament. Savana Corbridge earned the No. 19 seed at first singles and will open against Snow Canyon’s Mckinley Labrum, while Madison Phillips is the No. 17 seed at second singles and draws Wasatch’s Elle Smith. Paige Jones earned the No. 20 seed at third singles and will face Mountain Crest’s Grace Hadfield. In doubles, Ryleigh Rhodes and Lucy Duncan earned the No. 22 seed at first doubles and will take on Judge Memorial’s Caroline Chachas and Olivia Lee, while Bridget Deaton and Hannah Goodliffe are the No. 21 seed at second doublesand draw Park City’s Sophie Lane and Autumn Tewart. That gives Bear River a representative in every state bracketwhen first-round action begins Thursday at Brighton High School.

AGGIE ALERT 🐮

Photo from USU Football on X

Bronco’s Squad Bounces Back During Homecoming Week

The Aggies picked up their first win of the season with a 21-10 win over Troy, and Javen Jacobs gave the offense a much-needed spark with 84 rushing yards and a touchdown. Our QB, Grady Brosterhous, finished with 242 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 1 rushing touchdown. The defense deserves plenty of credit too, forcing three interceptions, including one from Brevin Hamblin, who also piled up 12 tackles. Defensive standout Harrison Taggart made an appearance at the game on Saturday. He was seriously injured on a play against the Utes on Sept. 19 and has been posting updates in the hospital as he regains movement and strength.

Utah State heads to Boise today to face No. 22 Boise State in its first Pac-12 football game. USU might only be 1-3, but we still don’t really know what this team is yet. They’ve already played Utah and Washington, lost by just two in Seattle, and now get another ranked opponent. Tonight should tell us a lot.

Aggie Basketball Getting Ready

Photos from Jeff Hunter

And yes, basketball season is almost here. New head coach Ben Jacobson has officially started practice with a roster featuring just four returners and 11 newcomers, so there’s going to be plenty to figure out early. The good news? Mason Falslev and Karson Templin are both back, and former BYU/Virginia guard Dallin Hall is one of the newcomers joining them. (Thank you, Falslev - their connection goes way back to when they played travel basketball together).

We get our first look Oct. 10 against Denver at the Spectrum and another exhibition game at Santa Clara on Saturday, October. 24.

USU Volleyball Earned Their 1st Win

Volleyball might be starting to figure things out. After a rough start to the year, the Aggies have now won back-to-back Pac-12 matches, following up their win over Gonzaga with a 3-1 victory over Fresno State. Sami Blackett had 16 kills, Olivia Tukuafu stuffed the stat sheet with 42 assists, 11 digs and six kills, and Utah State was an absolute problem at the net with 16 team blocks. Now we get a pretty good measuring stick Saturday when preseason Pac-12 favorite Colorado State comes to Logan. Win that one and suddenly this little two-match run becomes a lot more interesting.

Aggie Soccer Continues to Make Waves

And then there’s Utah State soccer, which might quietly be the best story happening on campus right now. The No. 19 Aggies beat No. 22 Texas State 2-1 to open Pac-12 play and are now 8-2-2. The final score doesn’t really tell the story either — Utah State outshot Texas State 33-4. Thirty-three to four! This program just continues to win, and now we know the road through the Pac-12 will eventually come through Logan too, with Bell Field hosting the conference tournament later this fall. If you haven’t been paying attention to Aggie soccer yet, it’s probably time.
