AGGIE ALERT 🐮

Maverik Ends Partnership with USU: Adventure’s First Last Stop?

In 2015, Maverik agreed to pay Utah State athletics $6.3 million for the naming rights to the football stadium. It went from Romney Stadium to Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The financials behind the deal was Maverik paying USU $300k per year until 2037.

On August 31, USU Athletic Director, Cam Walker, announced that Maverik reached out to USU to end the naming rights deal early. Starting January 1, 2027, it will be called Jim Laub Family Stadium.

Does this hurt or help USU athletics in the long-term? Some say the Aggies missed out on gaining a massive company to sponsor the stadium, while others say it frees up more creativity and space to sell signage and other sponsorships around the stadium.

Maybe Buc-ee’s coming to Utah is affecting changes like this…

McCae Hillstead’s Return to USU

McCae Hillstead’s first run at Utah State wasn’t great, but he played solid as a true freshman. In 2023, Hillstead threw for 1,062 yards and 11 touchdowns. Against James Madison, he had a 399-yard, four-touchdown performance that we ended up losing late in the 4th. Crazy enough, that JMU team was coached by Curt Cignetti.

After two seasons at BYU, Hillstead returns older, more experienced and perhaps in a better system for his skill set. His quick release, and mobility could fit really well in Robert Anae’s offense. Obviously his height is a concern, but Utah State isn’t getting the same freshman quarterback who left Logan. To give some context to OC Anae, he’s coached Taysom Hill, Max Hall, Kurt Benkert, and Brennan Armstrong to name a few.

USU Women’s Soccer Heating Up 🔥

Led by junior, Ellie Hendrix, USU is now 4-1-1, currently on a 4-game winning streak. She scored game-winning goals against UVU and Utah.

The most recent match was against Utah Tech, where the Aggies won 8-1. Samantha Sellers scored twice and already has three goals on the year.
